About the Deep Blues Festival:

In 2007, Chris Johnson held the first Deep Blues Festival in a field just outside of the twin cities.  18 bands performed in an all day event.  This was a celebration of outsider and alternative blues and music inspired by these artists.  Over the years, hundreds of bands have been involved with the festival and also performing at Chris’ Bayport BBQ.

Deep Blues

“What excited me about this music was that it was so different,” said Johnson. “It was raw and immediate and went all the way back to the roots, and artists like R.L. and Junior had so much character.”…”Next came his discovery of artists like the Black Diamond Heavies, Scott H. Biram, and Bob Log — younger independents making music under the influence of Kimbrough, Burnside, and their hill country kin, including Jessie Mae Hemphill and Othar Turner.”…”This new, raw strain of hybrid blues offers deep roots to fans of traditional music.

About the artist:

Tim Kerr is a fundamental and influential fixture of the early DIY scene, ending shows by saying

“go start a band”.

In autographs, and on the very poster artwork mentioned above, Tim Kerr signs

“your name here”

furthering the impetus for everyone to go out and create.

Backstory:

After college, Tim became involved with the early stages of the DIY (Do It Yourself) punk/hardcore/indie rock music and art movement. The ideology of the movement rose from the desire to circumvent mainstream consumer society through creative outlets such as street art, zines, independent music labels, thus empowering everyone to create and share through the subculture.

As a member of bands (The Big Boys, Poison 13, Bad Mutha Goose, Lord High Fixers, and Monkey Wrench) and as a producer, Kerr worked with revered labels such as Touch & Go, Kill Rock Stars, and Sub Pop.

He has shared bills with the likes of Grace Jones, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Fugazi, Black Flag, Africa Bambaataa, and X, to name a few, touring in the US and abroad.

Current company he keeps:

Tim Kerr has been featured in a documentary miniseries, Sonic Highways, directed by Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, for the musical and cultural contributions of his first band, the Big Boys.

Tim has also been showing his artwork, in the US and abroad, from New York to Germany, Chicago to a solo show in the summer of 2015 at the Rosa Parks Museum.
