History

Welcome to the New Roxy!

The New Roxy is a former movie theater located in the Historic New World District of Clarksdale Mississippi. Renovation began in 2008 after sitting vacant and deteriorating since the mid 1980’s. What remains physically is a shell of the former theater…. a sloping concrete floor, masonry stage, distressed yet beautiful brick walls, a gorgeous view of the night sky and a fabulous feeling that can only be understood when you stand inside.

We are currently open only for special events which often feature live blues music. Come join us as we try to recapture some of the rich history and culture of this once vibrant and important neighborhood in the heart of the Delta.

History

When I purchased the theater in 2008 it had been sitting vacant for over 30 years. With lots of help from friends and volunteers, we’ve been slowly but steadily ‘rebuilding’ this historic space and bringing it back to a useful life.   Hope you enjoy the detailed history below.

After all, it’s their history to tell, and I am just an eager “newbie” who is trying to absorb all I can about this fascinating place… continue reading

Future

The work and activity around the New Roxy and the sense of community interest with regard to all that’s been going with the clean out process the past few years has been truly overwhelming, yet gratifying.
